Chris Ward promotes us in Canada
At an early-March meeting of The Association for the Export of Canadian Books, NAIR Treasurer Chris Ward was invited to make the day’s final presentation. His subject was The Sales Rep’s Viewpoint. It followed presentations on the U.S. bookselling industry as a whole, library acquisitions, and distribution options from both the U.S. and Canadian perspectives.
BookExpo America 2002
The NAIPR booth has been moved for the BookExpo America 2002 meeting. Please make a note of the fact that we will be in Booth # 824. The change, according to Sales Manager Jason Krulewitz, was necessitated by an overall consolidation of the floor plan. From an examination of the plan, it appears to be a good location, not too far from the escalators and on the way to the Special Events Hall. We should therefore get some good traffic.
It is always to be hoped that as many of you as possible will come by to say hello and to do any business that may be appropriate to your needs. As an additional incentive, the first 200 member-visitors, rep or publisher, will receive a handsome pen to use and to remind them of NAIPR!
NAIPUR Meeting on May 5th
Following the closing of BookExpo America at 4:00PM on Sunday, May 5th, NAIPR will hold its semi-annual meeting at The Mayflower Hotel, 61st and Central Park West. The Board of Directors will meet at 6:30 PM; and the Membership meeting will begin at 8:00 PM in Suite 1203, the same as in December, 2001.
Since the biennial election of Officers and Board members will be completed at that time, it would be a very good idea to attend. Ballots will be going out beforehand to those rep members whose dues are current through 2002.
Our friend and colleague from Wordstock, Tom Bowler, has agreed to make a presentation to us on the subject of setting up and maintaining websites. Most of you are aware what a boost to visibility a website can be; and those who attended the NAIPR meeting at which our own website was presented by Tom are aware just what a capable presenter he is. Tom has been actively designing them now for some years, and you will benefit greatly from his experience
A message from our President
NAIPR is at another crossroads – we are having an election of officers, so be sure to send in your vote. Also, the state of the organizationis in the best shape it’s been in since its inception in 1988. We have added rep groups to our legions, and we boast 45 new publishers as associate members this year alone. This is an extremely positive sign, I believe. It shows that NAIPR is fulfilling a need for both reps and publishers. Our web site – www.naipr.org – acts as a clearinghouse for sales information and resources for inquiring publishers. The rank and file membership of reps benefits directly from this referral service. It gets the rep message out there loud and clear on the world wide web, and if publishers have questions about how independent sales groups operate, it’s all right there. Furthermore, the Frontlist-on-Floppy (FRF) program continues to be strong. This helps our bookselling friends do a more efficient job of ordering books and tracking sales. So NAIPR is a vital organization, and we continue to be there for you – members, associates and the book industry as a whole. We’ll see all of you in May at the Book Expo!
